“We See the Cargo as Our Passengers.”

“By joining the ANA Group, we can now transport cargo to countries and cities that we couldn’t reach on our own before, and we feel that the options we can offer our customers have expanded dramatically.”

Ayumi Kubota of the Marketing Team at Nippon Cargo Airlines (hereinafter referred to as NCA) said this with a smile. Hiromi Tsukashita, who works at the ANA Cargo Narita Warehouse Operations Center, listened to her words nodding repeatedly and added with conviction:

“We are confident that NCA’s specialized cargo handling skills and ANA’s extensive network complement each other, and can create a powerful combination carrier.”

A combination carrier is an airline that owns and operates both cargo-only aircraft (freighters) and passenger aircraft, and conducts cargo business. Its greatest feature is that it combines a wide network with the strength of mass transportation.

Last August, NCA, Japan’s only airline specialized in cargo, joined the ANA Group. And on April 1st of next year, ANA Cargo, NCA, and NCA Japan, a group company of NCA, will merge to form ANA Nippon Cargo Airlines Co., Ltd., one of Asia’s largest combination carriers.

This edition of Wings Style features people working on the front lines of the air cargo industry at both NCA and ANA Cargo before their merger.

Contributing to society in a way only an air cargo company can

“Since last year, we have held numerous meetings with ANA Cargo staff to deepen our understanding of each other. Going forward, we want to work together as partners and demonstrate strong teamwork.” (Ayumi)

“I joined NCA in 2023. My experience working at a manufacturer in my previous job motivated me to change careers. Normally, we used sea freight, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a shortage of container ships and logistics were thrown into chaos. At that time, air cargo helped us to keep our factories running stably. From there, I became interested in the air cargo industry and knocked on the door of NCA, Japan’s only airline specializing in cargo.”

Ayumi spoke about how she came to be in her current position, reflecting on her career to date. In contrast, Hiromi joined ANA Cargo in 2015.

“Within the aviation industry, I was particularly interested in the transport of goods and air cargo. The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred when I was a student, and there was a time when I aspired to become a national civil servant in a security-related field, such as the Japan Self-Defense Forces or the Japan Coast Guard. I wanted to do a job that would support society from behind the scenes.”

Of all the experiences in her career, Hiromi said that the most memorable was, once again, her experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was the first time I’d ever seen an airport terminal with absolutely no passengers. However, at the same time, the cargo area transit sheds were overflowing with cargo, and many trucks were gathered there. It was incredibly busy and very challenging, but being able to deliver masks and medicines to those who needed them was a very rewarding moment for me. This was the sort of impactful work I’d always wanted to do.”

Ayumi of NCA also said, “I feel very fulfilled.”

Ayumi: You hear all sorts of news every day, but the aviation industry is directly affected by international affairs, so as we go about our daily work, we can feel the movements of the global economy firsthand. I find it rewarding to think about and respond to these changes as they come. Ultimately, being able to contribute, even in a small way, to the development of the economy and industry, and to people’s lives, is what I think is the greatest appeal of this job.

From racehorses to satellites: the professionals who transport special cargo

“I’m excited at the thought of the possibility of being involved in nose operations (left page, top) and other tasks on NCA-operated aircraft.” (Hiromi)

The average passenger has very little contact with cargo-only aircraft. We asked Ayumi of NCA, a cargo-only airline, about the aircraft and what kind of goods they actually transport.

Ayumi: NCA operates a cargo-only aircraft called the Boeing 747-8F. The entire area where passenger seats would be on a passenger plane is dedicated to cargo. A distinctive feature is the nose cargo door, which opens wide at the front of the aircraft.

The Boeing 747 series cargo aircraft, affectionately known as the Jumbo Jet for many years, is one of the world’s largest aircraft, boasting a payload capacity of over 130 tons. NCA operates eight of these. Long and large cargo items can be loaded directly through the nose cargo door.

Ayumi: We’ve loaded the world’s largest movie screen, measuring 18 meters in length, as well as racing cars and even an entire helicopter with its rotor blades removed. We also transport racehorses competing in major overseas races. The racehorses are loaded in special containers called horse stalls. To reduce the stress the horses experience, we thoroughly control the air conditioning inside the aircraft to maintain a comfortable temperature, and there’s also space on the upper deck for people to ride along, so grooms and veterinarians can accompany them and provide water and hay as needed during the flight.

The cargo often reflects the times.

Ayumi: Recently, we’ve seen a huge increase in shipments of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, AI-related servers, and server racks. Our clients are aware that NCA’s aircraft are among the largest cargo planes in the world, and we sometimes receive cargo that has been carefully packed to fit the shape of the 747, with curved corners and cut to the absolute limit of its size to fit through the doors. Not only is it large, but these items are also very delicate, so we have to handle them with extreme care.

ANA Cargo also handles the transport of specialized cargo. In such cases, the Professional Unit, of which Hiromi is a member, plays a vital role.

Semiconductor manufacturing equipment, fresh produce, works of art, and musical instruments require meticulous attention to temperature control and vibration. Pharmaceuticals and medical devices, which are critical to the lives of many people, are some of the other items requiring special transportation. The Professional Unit is a system where employees with the necessary knowledge and transportation skills supervise the entire process, from initial consideration of the project to completion of transportation, when a request for such specialized transportation is received. Established in July 2023, it currently consists of 15 members who handle preliminary meetings with clients, planning loading schedules, and even actual cargo sorting and loading at the transit shed. Hiromi recounted an example of a project undertaken by the Professional Unit: the transportation of a satellite.

“We transported an entire satellite to Auckland, New Zealand. We consulted with the client beforehand to determine the placement and securing points to minimize vibrations during the flight, and we also gave it careful consideration. Of course, careful handling on the ground was necessary, so members of our Professional Unit accompanied it to the site. We assisted with everything from transporting the satellite from the tarmac to the transit shed, to guiding the forklifts and unloading it at the transit shed.”

Air cargo professionals will continue to oversee everything from start to finish, always viewing the cargo as their customer.

Hiromi: I think the same is true for everyone at NCA, but everyone at ANA Cargo is highly professional. So I don’t think it’s because we’re a professional unit that we were able to achieve this. Rather, I think the professional unit is a system to further improve that quality and accuracy.

Combining strengths to create a new combination carrier

The person on the right in the photo is Kayato Shibata, who works at ANA Cargo. Having worked for NCA for many years under contract in transit sheds and on aircraft, Kayato is one of the people who knows the characteristics of both companies well. “With the business integration, we should be able to transport cargo that NCA or ANA Cargo alone could not handle before.”

Combining the strengths of being a freight specialist, an extensive network, and a high level of professionalism, a new combination carrier will soon be born.

Ayumi: Since April of this year, we have been loading ANA Cargo’s cargo onto NCA flights, and we have already started doing the reverse as well. ANA has a passenger flight network, and there are also routes within Asia that NCA has not operated before. By leveraging these strengths, we would like to offer a wider variety of transportation options for the important cargo entrusted to us by our customers, and we hope to achieve even greater results as a group. Up until now, each company had its own strengths, but from now on, it will not matter which company has the strengths, but rather we will work together to make the most of the combined strengths we have and achieve the best possible results. That’s the kind of work we aim to achieve.

Hiromi continued with a smile.

“By taking the best aspects of both companies’ handling and sharing a common understanding that we must prioritize the customers who entrust us with their cargo, we believe we can become a stronger company by complementing each other.”
