6月のごあいさつ　北欧神話の旅への誘い

紫陽花（あじさい）の花の鮮やかさが雨粒に映える季節、いかがお過ごしでしょうか。　日本とは裏腹に、ヨーロッパでは待ちに待った観光シーズンが始まり、太陽が降り注ぐ中、バカンスを楽しむ人々で街が賑わっています。スウェーデンでは「ミッドサマー」という夏至祭（げしさい）が開催され、家族や友人とともに歌と踊りで夏の訪れを盛大にお祝いするそうです。　

私がスウェーデンの首都ストックホルムを訪れたのは、ANAが初めてこの地に就航した直後の今年2月初めのことでした。氷点下の寒さで日の入りも16時すぎと夜が長く感じられたものですが、今の時期は22時頃まで明るいとのこと。「世界でもっとも美しい首都」「北欧のヴェネツィア」などと称されるストックホルム。

東京から8千キロ以上も離れた彼（か）の地に住まう人々は、いったいどんな暮らしをされているのだろうと興味津々で地元の方々とお話ししましたが、意外にも私たち日本人との共通点が多いことに気づきました。　

1つは「玄関で靴を脱ぐ文化」です。昨年のオリンピックで卓球男子個人と団体で銀メダルを獲得したスウェーデン代表のモーレゴード選手が使用していた“多角形ラケット（※）”。このイノベーティブなラケットに惹かれて、製造元の「STIGA社」を訪ねた際、「少し打っていきませんか？」と誘われて卓球場にお邪魔したところ、入口で「靴を脱いでお入りください」と言われ、戸惑ってしまいました。「欧米では屋内も靴を脱がない」それが常識だと思っていたからです。日本と同じく玄関で靴を脱ぐのが習慣とのことでまず驚かされました。

2つめはその「国民性」です。現地でお会いした多くの方はとても几帳面で、時間を守り、控えめで穏やかな性格が印象的でした。現地にお住まいの日本の方によれば、北欧一の大都市でありながら、ストックホルムはまるで日本にいるかのように安心・安全に過ごせる街だということです。日本と同様に伝統ある王室をいただき、日本と150年もの外交関係があること、豊かな自然を誇り、いまもその自然と共存するように暮らしを営んでいること、自然への畏敬（いけい）の念が込められた古代信仰や、それにまつわる神々の物語「北欧神話」がいまも色濃く残り大事にされていること。よく見ると様々なところに日本人との共通点があるように思えます。　

北欧神話と言われても、ピンとこない方も少なくないかもしれません。ですが『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』や『進撃の巨人』など、近年人気を集めた映画やアニメ、ゲームなどの多くの作品が、北欧神話をモチーフにしていることで知られています。　ストックホルムの北70キロほどにある、ウプサラという街。北欧最古の大学があるこの古都は、古代北欧の宗教的中心地、聖地とされ、古代の神殿の跡地や巨大な墳丘が遥かなる時を超えて息づいています。オーディン（戦いの神）、トール（農耕神）、フレイヤ（愛と美の神）といった個性豊かな神々を信仰していた人々。その精神性に八百万（やおよろず）の神々を受け入れ大切にしてきた日本人の心のありようと、どこか共鳴するものを感じます。

ヨーロッパにはギリシャ神話、ローマ神話、ケルト神話など、多くの神話があります。梅雨のこの時期、夏に向けてスウェーデンをはじめとしたヨーロッパの神話を巡る旅の計画を立ててみてはいかがでしょうか。そこには他の旅にはないあなただけのファンタジーの世界が待っているはずです。

An Invitation to a Journey Through Norse Mythology

It’s the season of vibrant hydrangeas, glimmering with drops of rain. How are you spending it?
While this time of year may be the rainy season in Japan, in Europe, it’s the season for sightseeing. Towns come alive with travelers enjoying their vacation beneath the sun, and Sweden in particular, holds a festival called Midsummer, which is celebrated with song and dance among friends and family to welcome the summer.
I visited Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, in early February, not long after ANA opened its first flight there. The freezing temperatures in combination with the sun setting just after 4:00 p.m. made the nights feel especially long, but during this time of year, daylight lasts until around 10:00 p.m. Stockholm is known to be one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world, and it’s often called the “Venice of the North.” I was curious to know what life was like there, so I talked to the locals and was surprised to find that despite living 8,000 kilometers away from Tokyo, they share a lot in common with the Japanese.
One thing we share in common is removing our shoes at the entrance. Intrigued by the polygonal table tennis paddle* used by the men’s individual and team silver medalist Truls Möregårdh in the 2024 Olympic Games, I visited STIGA, the manufacturer behind its innovative design. I felt bold enough to accept their invitation to play a few rounds, but as I was about to enter the court, I was told to take off my shoes, which confused me. I had thought it was common practice for Westerners to keep their shoes on even while indoors. So it was surprising that the custom of removing shoes at an entrance was common sense there, just like in Japan.
Another thing we share is our national communal character. Despite Stockholm being the largest Scandinavian city, many of the people I met were meticulous, punctual, humble, and calm. A Japanese person I met there said they feel the same sense of safety and security as Japan, regardless of where they go in the city. On top of that, Sweden also has a traditional royal family, has had diplomatic relations with Japan for 150 years, is proud of its abundant nature with which its people coexist, and has a strong reverence and respect for their faith, including the gods of Norse Mythology associated with it. When you take a closer look, Swedish and Japanese people really do have many things in common.
For some people, nothing immediately comes to mind when they hear the term “Norse Mythology.” However, the influence of Norse Mythology can be seen over the years in popular movies such as “The Lord of the Rings,” in anime such as “Attack on Titan,” as well as in games and other works.
About 70 kilometers north of Stockholm is a city called Uppsala, which is home to the oldest university in Scandinavia and also a religious mecca. Even today, temple ruins and giant burial mounds from ancient times are still standing. The people here worshipped Norse gods such as Odin, the god of war; Thor, the god of agriculture; and Freyja, the goddess of love and beauty. The spirituality of the people here resonates deeply with the Japanese, as we too revere and cherish many different gods as well.
Including Norse mythology in Sweden, Europe is home to other mythologies as well, such as Greek, Roman, and Celtic. So why not escape the rainy season to explore European mythology in a fantasy world beneath the sun? Personally, Stockholm impressed me so much because it was much more of a wonderful place than I initially imagined. 邀您感受北欧神话之旅

进入紫阳花盛开的季节，雨中的色彩格外动人，各位最近都好吗？
　　这一时节的欧洲和日本相反，人们期待已久的旅游季已经启动。在普照的阳光下，享受假期的人们熙熙攘攘，街道上热闹非凡。瑞典会举办名为“仲夏节”来庆祝夏至。届时人们会与家人、朋友一起载歌载舞，隆重庆祝夏天的到来。
　　ANA首次开通直通瑞典首都斯德哥尔摩的航线后不久，我便于今年2月初到访了此地。气温降至零下，下午4点多便夕阳西下，夜晚让人感觉十分漫长。但眼下这个时节，22点左右天都很明亮的。斯德哥尔摩被称为“世界上最美丽的首都”、“北欧威尼斯”。在距离东京8千多公里的那片土地上的人们，究竟过着怎样的生活呢？我饶有兴致地和当地人聊了聊这个问题，意外地发现他们其实和日本人有很多共同点。
　　一是“在玄关脱鞋的文化”。去年在奥运会乒乓球男子个人和团体项目中获得银牌的瑞典选手莫雷加德所使用的“多角形球拍（※）”。我被这种创新型球拍吸引，便去拜访了制造商“斯帝卡（STIGA）公司”。当时那边邀请我尝试打打看，我去到乒乓球场的时候，在入口处就让我“脱鞋进去”，这让我有些不知所措。因为我原本以为欧美人在室内一般也不会脱鞋。而瑞典竟然和日本一样，都习惯于在玄关脱鞋，这首先让我吃了一惊。
　　二是“国民性”。在瑞典遇到的很多当地人都非常认真、守时，性格内敛稳重，这给我留下了深刻的印象。据居住在当地的日本人说，斯德哥尔摩虽然是北欧最大的城市，但人们却生活的和在日本一样安心、安全。瑞典与日本一样拥有传统的王室，与日本有着150年的外交关系，拥有丰富的自然资源。瑞典人至今仍与自然和谐共处，其自古以来的传统信仰充满着对自然的敬畏之念，与信仰相关的诸神故事“北欧神话”至今深深根植于其文化之中。仔细一看，会发现在各方面似乎都与日本人有共通之处。
　　说到北欧神话，可能有不少人并不了解。但其实《指环王》、《进击的巨人》等近年来人气颇高的电影、动画、游戏等大量作品都取材于北欧神话。
　　乌普萨拉位于斯德哥尔摩以北70公里处。这座古都拥有北欧最古老的大学，是古代北欧宗教的中心和圣地，古老的神殿遗址和巨大的坟丘在漫长遥远的时空中生生不息。人们信仰奥丁（战神）、托尔（农耕神）、弗蕾亚（爱与美之神）等具特色的神明。这种精神性，与接受并珍视“八百万神明”的日本人心态之间似乎存在着某种共鸣。
　　欧洲有许多神话，如希腊神话，罗马神话和凯尔特神话。不妨趁着梅雨季节，计划一趟以瑞典为头阵的欧洲神话之旅吧。相信会邂逅一个绝无仅有的幻想世界。与我而言，斯德哥尔摩比想象的还要精彩百倍，让我感慨良多。希望大家今年暑假能通过ANA的航线体验令人感动的北欧之旅。衷心期盼各位的搭乘。
