4月のごあいさつ　新しい風を吹かせよう

今月もANAをご利用くださり誠にありがとうございます。

新緑の芽吹く4月となりました。3年ぶりに多くの新入社員を迎え、活気づく職場に改めて「若い力」のエネルギーを感じています。様々なバックグラウンドや強みを持つ彼ら彼女らが、これからどんな新しい風をANAに吹き込んでくれるのか楽しみでなりません。

若者の力は、これまでも歴史を大きく動かしてきました。柔軟な感性と吸収力、逞しい行動力、経験値の少なさも、むしろ過去に囚われないという強みかもしれません。

私がいつも思い出すのは、後に「薩摩スチューデント」と呼ばれる19人の若人です。今から約160年前、西洋に負けない国づくりのために、命懸けでイギリスへ旅立ちました。最年長は32歳、最年少は13歳の彼らは、ちょうど今と同じ頃、見つかれば死罪は免れないという緊張感の中、鹿児島県のいちき串木野から夜陰に紛れて密航船に乗り込みました。

最初の寄港地、香港では、初めて見るガス灯で彩られた夜景に感嘆した話が遺されています。その後もマレーシア、インド、イエメン、エジプト、マルタ、ジブラルタル……各寄港地で出会う、想像したこともないワクワクする光景に衝撃を受け、日に日に彼らの目の輝きが増していった様子が目に浮かびます。

イギリス到着後は西洋の先進的な知識・文化を貪欲に吸収する一方、1867年パリ万博に薩摩藩が単独で出展する手配をし、薩摩焼や黒糖などの展示を通じて世界へ情報発信を行ったことにも驚きます。帰国後は、近代日本の国づくりに大きな貢献を果たしました。彼らが学んだロンドン大学には、輝かしい功績を讃える石碑が建立されています。当時の英国の人々に強い印象を与えたのは、学業の優秀さだけではなく、彼らの日本人としての誇りある振る舞いや礼節をわきまえた言動もあったと言われています。

一方、薩摩スチューデントを派遣した薩摩藩の優れた知見とリーダーシップがなければ彼らの活躍はありませんでした。薩英戦争で英国の軍事力を目の当たりにした薩摩藩は、敵国であっても学ぶべきことがあると判断し、わずか2年後に優秀な若者たちをその英国に留学させました。そこには島津斉彬公以降、蓄積してきた世界情勢に関する情報をもとに、自分たちの価値観をアップデートさせ、「西欧の近代的技術を学び、豊かな強い国をつくらなければ、日本も列強に支配される」という強い危機感がありました。

それにしても多くのリスクがある中、国禁を犯してまで日本の未来のために断行した意思決定、マネジメント力の素晴らしさには敬服するばかりです。情報収集力と分析力、グローバルな視点から日本のあるべき姿を考え、一度決めたらスピーディに実行に移すことの大切さは、環境の変化が著しい現代の私たちも変わりはなく、経営トップとして私自身、「志高く、思い切ってゆけ！」とエールを送られている気も致します。

世界はコロナ禍を経て、幕末維新に似た新しい時代への胎動が聞こえてきます。4月に新入社員を迎え、改めてどんなANAをつくり、日本に、世界に貢献できるかと考えました。お客様や社会をもっとワクワクさせたい。新しい一歩を踏み出そうとする人たちが、日本中、世界中の「薩摩スチューデントが見た香港のガス灯」のような刺激に出会い、心に火を灯し、変革を起こすこと、そして人々を笑顔にすることを応援し続けるエアラインでありたいと思います。

今年度も安全運航を第一に、皆さまの笑顔のために力を尽くしてまいります。引き続き青い翼をよろしくお願い致します。

Today’s youth breathe new life into ANA

Thank you for flying with ANA this month. Now that April has arrived, new leaves are growing in Japan. This month marks the hiring of many new graduates by Japanese companies, including ANA. It’s been three years since we’ve seen such an influx of new talent, and their youthful energy is already invigorating our workplaces.

I look forward to seeing how these young individuals with diverse backgrounds and skills will breathe new life into ANA. Young people are keen to take action, open to learning and quickly absorb new information. Perhaps their lack of experience is actually a strength as they do not feel confined to the past.

Certainly, the power of youth has greatly swayed the course of history. When I consider this, I always think of a group of 19 young people later dubbed the “Satsuma students.” About 160 years ago, they embarked on a journey to England, risking their lives for the sake of Japan’s development when it was lagging behind the West. In those days, traveling outside Japan was strictly forbidden and punishable by death, yet this group secretly stowed away on a ship departing from Ichikikushikino in Kagoshima Prefecture under the cover of night to avoid being caught. Their ages ranged from 13 to 32 at the time.

During their first stop in Hong Kong, the group was captivated by the evening cityscape illuminated by gas lamps, a sight they had never before encountered. The boat continued its journey, making stops in Malaysia, India, Yemen, Egypt, Malta and Gibraltar. At each port of call, the students were amazed by breathtaking sights they never could have fathomed. I can only imagine how their eyes must have lit up on each day of the journey.

Upon reaching England, the students eagerly absorbed the advanced knowledge and culture of the West. At the same time, they made arrangements for the Satsuma Domain to exhibit at the 1867 Paris Exposition, which made it possible for the world to see goods from Satsuma, such as porcelain and brown sugar.

After returning home, the Satsuma students made significant contributions to the development of modern-day Japan. At University College London where they studied, a stone monument has been erected to commemorate their remarkable achievements. The people of England were deeply impressed by the students’ academic accomplishments, alongside their polite demeanor and dignity as Japanese people.

The Satsuma students were dispatched to England by the Satsuma Domain, and without this foresight and leadership, their achievements would never have been possible. Having experienced England’s military power during the Bombardment of Kagoshima in 1863, the Satsuma Domain chose to learn from their adversary and sent the talented group of young men to study in England just two years later.

In fact, the domain had already been gathering information about the world under the guidance of feudal lord Shimazu Nariakira. To this end, it recognized how Japan was in danger of being taken over by Western powers unless it renewed its values, studied modern European technology and developed into a rich, strong nation. Decisive action was necessary for the sake of Japan’s future, even if it meant defying state government restrictions. Today, I have nothing but admiration for the domain’s superb decision-making and leadership abilities.

Gathering and analyzing information, considering what’s best for society from a global perspective, and swiftly putting decisions into action remain important today, especially since our world continues to be affected by major changes. As company president, I am compelled to reach for the stars with unflagging determination.

Japan transitioned from feudal rule to modernization in the late 1800s. Similarly, with the COVID-19 pandemic now behind us, we hear calls around the world today to embrace a new era of change.

As ANA welcomed new employees in April, I was once again reminded how we can renew our company while contributing to Japan and the rest of the world. We hope to bring more excitement to our customers and their communities. When people embark on a journey, whether in Japan or abroad, they will make exciting new discoveries, just like the Satsuma students did when they saw the gas lamps of Hong Kong.

At ANA, we want to continue to warm people’s hearts, inspire change and bring joy to people everywhere. From this April and beyond, everyone at ANA looks forward to delighting our passengers while giving top priority to flight safety.

让新风吹拂起来

感谢您本月对全日空一如既往的支持。时值四月，草木冒出了新绿的嫩叶。我们时隔三年迎来了许许多多的新员工，他们给职场注入了新的活力，我再次感受到青春的能量，并迫不及待地期待看到有着不同成长历程及优势的他们与她们，未来在全日空吹起新风。

自古以来，年轻人一直是推动历史的巨大力量。他们具备柔韧的感性和吸收能力以及勇往直前的行动能力，虽然经验尚嫌不足，但反过来说这也能成为不受惯例束缚的优势。我常常想起被后世称为“萨摩学生”的19名年轻人。大约在距今160年前，为了把日本建设成一个可以与西方比肩的国家，他们冒着生命危险出发前往英国。最年长的成员32岁，最小的13岁，他们明知一旦被抓就会被判死罪，仍然义无反顾地踏上征程，刚好也是在现在这个季节，他们一起乘着夜色从鹿儿岛县的市来串木野启程并登上了偷渡船。

翻看当年的记录，当他们来到第一个停靠的港口香港，第一次看到煤气灯照亮的夜景时，他们发出了惊叹。随后，他们依次到达了马来西亚、印度、也门、埃及、马耳他、直布罗陀……每到一个停靠港，他们都会为超越想象的景象而激动不已，内心受到震撼，我可以想象，他们眼中的光芒一定是与日俱增。

到达英国后，他们如饥似渴地吸收西方先进的知识和文化，同时还安排了萨摩藩在1867年的巴黎万国博览会上独立参展，通过萨摩烧、黑糖等展品向世界传播信息，这实在让人感到惊讶。回国后，他们投身国家建设，为日本的现代化做出了巨大贡献。曾经就读的伦敦大学为众学生竖立了一座石碑，以纪念其丰功伟绩。据说，当时给英国人民留下深刻印象的不仅是优秀的学业成绩，他们身为日本人充满自信的姿态和彬彬有礼的言谈举止更是让人难忘。

另一方面，如果不是萨摩藩具备远见卓识和坚强的领导能力，也就不可能派遣萨摩学生，让他们有机会大展身手。在萨英战争中，萨摩藩亲眼目睹了英国的军事实力，认为敌国也有值得学习的地方，仅仅两年后，就派出优秀的年轻人到英国留学。萨摩藩在岛津齐彬大名之后，根据不断积累的有关世界局势的信息，更新了价值观，并且抱有强烈的危机感⸺“如果不学习西欧的现代技术，创建富裕而强大的国家，未来也会受列强支配”。即便如此，面对各种风险，为了日本的未来，他们甚至违反国家禁令，义无反顾地做出决策，同时展现了卓越的管理能力，这让我由衷地敬佩。

具备信息收集能力和分析能力，站在全球角度思考日本应有的姿态，一旦做出决定就要迅速付诸行动，即使是在环境瞬息万变的当今时代，这个道理同样适用于我们，而我自身作为一社之长，感到他们正在鼓励我“志存高远，勇往直前！”

世界蒙受了新冠疫情的灾害后，类似于幕府末期明治维新时期，我们可以察觉到新时代的“胎动”。值此四月份迎来新员工之际，我再次思索，我们可以创造什么样的全日空，从而为日本和世界做出贡献。我们无比期待能给顾客和社会带来充满期待的兴奋感受。同时也衷心希望作为一家航空公司，能为那些正在努力迈出新一步的人们提供支持，让他们在全日本乃至全世界邂逅“萨摩学生初见香港煤气灯”时的激动，点燃心中的火焰，积极掀起改革，以行动给人们带来美好的笑容。

本年度我们也将坚持安全航行第一，为了大家的笑容，我们会全力以赴。请继续支持我们蓝色的机翼。
